Why banks reject business loans, and how to fix your file

Most business loans are not rejected because the owner cannot repay. They are rejected because the file did not match what that particular lender looks for, or because something in it raised a question nobody answered. The good news: almost every one of these reasons can be fixed before you apply again.

1. The loan went to the wrong lender

Every bank and NBFC has its own policy: minimum turnover, years in business, industries it avoids, cities it serves, how much it will lend against your income. A trader with strong cash sales may be a perfect fit for one NBFC and a poor fit for a large bank. Applying without checking these rules is the single biggest cause of rejection.

Fix: shortlist lenders whose policy fits your profile before you apply. This is the core of what a good loan facilitator does.

2. Income on paper does not support the EMI

Lenders look at the income shown in your ITR and bank statements, not what the business actually earns in cash. If your declared profit is low, your eligibility will be low, however good business really is.

  • File ITRs on time, with a proper computation and audited financials where applicable.
  • Route sales through your current account so bank statements reflect real turnover.
  • Keep GST returns consistent with the turnover in your ITR.

3. Too many recent enquiries

Each time a lender pulls your credit report for a loan application, it is recorded as a hard enquiry. Several enquiries in a few weeks signal that you are shopping for credit urgently, and lenders become cautious.

Fix: stop applying everywhere. Apply to one or two well-matched lenders at a time.

4. Bouncing cheques and low balances

Lenders read your bank statement closely. Cheque or EMI bounces, frequent negative balances and large unexplained cash deposits all count against you.

Fix: give it a few clean months. Keep enough balance for every EMI and mandate, and avoid inward cheque returns.

5. Missing or mismatched documents

A different address on Aadhaar and GST, a missing year of ITR, an unsigned partnership deed: small gaps like these can stall a file at verification for weeks, and sometimes end in rejection.

Before applying, check that names, addresses and business details match across PAN, Aadhaar, GST, Udyam and bank records.

6. Existing loans already take most of your income

Lenders limit how much of your income can go toward EMIs. If current loans already use most of it, a new loan will not fit, even if your credit score is good.

Fix: close small high-interest loans first, or consider a balance transfer that lowers your total EMI.

A quick pre-application checklist

  • Two years of ITR with computation, filed on time
  • Twelve months of current-account statements without bounces
  • GST returns that match your turnover
  • Matching KYC and business registration details
  • A credit report you have checked yourself for errors
  • A lender shortlist chosen for your profile, not at random

Rejected once does not mean rejected forever. In most cases the profile was fine. The file just needed preparing, and the application needed the right address.
